Originally Rajasthan was divided into small provinces that were under constant fight and struggle with each other. It is considered that during the period of the Rajputs the state became somewhat united.
History of Rajasthan from 700 AD to 1200 AD were dominated by various Rajput clans. Before the Rajputs the state had remain a part of the Malavas, Guptas, Hunas, Kushans, Saka Satraps, and Mauryan Empire. Between 1000 AD to 1200 AD, there were war between the Chalukyas, Chauhans and Parmars to establish supremacy. According to the history of Rajasthan, the state was dominated by the Muslim rulers from 1201 to 1707. At that time Nagaur and Ajmer were the main two cities. However, during the 13th century AD, Mewar emerged as the most powerful city. Rajasthan became united only during the rule of the Mughal emperor Akbar.
However the Mughal dynasty began to decline during 1707. At that time, the Marathas emerged as a supreme power. Ajmer was occupied by the Marathas during this time. The British Government made a treaty of alliance with the Rajputanas during 1817-1818.
The present day state of Rajasthan was formed during 1948, post independence, by uniting the 19 princely states. Currently the state has 32 districts, 105 sub divisions, 222 towns and 241 tehsils.
